Tenchi Muyo!

Tenchi Masaki thought he was just a normal 17 year old, living with his father and grandfather at the family’s Shinto Shrine. For the unsuspecting Tenchi, everything he knows is going to be turned upside down as a handful of crazy women are about to invade his life, each with their own interest in Tenchi. Together they’ll help Tenchi realize his destiny. But more importantly, Tenchi Masaki is about to learn that "love stinks."

Initially advertised as "Tenchi Muyo!" three separate Tenchi series aired on Toonami. The first, the "Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OVA" premiered on July 3rd, 2000 at 5:30 pm. The second, "Tenchi Universe" premiered July 20, 2000 at 6 pm. And the final series, "Tenchi in Tokyo" premiered August 25, 2000 at 6 pm as well. On Febuarary 23, 2002, the Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OVA made its return to Cartoon Network as a part of Adult Swim’s brand new all action themed Saturday night lineup, airing at the tail end of the block at 1:30 am.

.:Misc.

  • Tenchi Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo are "alternate retellings" of the Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OVA series. Aside from featuring the same characters in similar situations each series is it’s own continuity and is not related to the others.

  • Kiyone, Mihoshi’s perpetually ill-fated Galaxy Police partner makes her first animated appearance in the Tenchi Muyo! Mihoshi Special, which takes place between the first and second OVA series. For unknown reasons the Mihoshi Special was not included in the Toonami or Adult Swim broadcasts of the Tenchi OVA series, relegating Kiyone’s first network appearance to Tenchi Universe. In all likelihood, Kiyone blames her delayed television appearance on Mihoshi.

  • Besides the two OVAs and two television series, there are still several Tenchi properties that have not aired on Toonami or Adult Swim. These include: a third OVA (taking place after the second OVA), Tenchi Muyo! GXP (set in the OVA universe), The Mihoshi Special, three movies, and two(!) Magical Girl Pretty Sasami series. To date Cartoon Network has made no announcements regarding the broadcast of these additional series.

  • Due to inappropriate content, Tenchi Muyo! was censored for language, nudity, and alcohol references. The introduction of the "digikini" (a digital bathing suit used to cover up nude characters), as well as alcohol being called "tea" has resulted in several on-going jokes in the Toonami fandom.

  • During its Adult Swim broadcast, Tenchi Muyo! aired with the same edits as the Toonami broadcast.

  • The two-minute long Tenchi Muyo! promo is considered one of the best Toonami advertisements ever made.
