Outlaw Star

Gene Starwind is a man with a past. Working as a part time mercenary, bounty hunter, and bodyguard with his partner Jim Hawkings, the two run a small buisness on the planet Centinel 3. When a woman named Hilda hires them for a bodygaurd gig, all of their plans change. Cast into a mysterious new plot, Gene and his rag-tag crew find themselves on the run from cops, pirates, aliens, and an assassin shrowded in mystery. Stumbling upon an experimental new ship called the Outlaw Star, Gene decides unlocking the secrets of the galaxy's most advanced ship and those of their mysterious crew member, Melfina, will help him find the answers he seeks in his own life. And of course wealth, fame, and other such riches...they've just got to find them befofe the Pirates Guild and the mystic Tao priests catch up to them.

Outlaw Star joined the Toonami ranks on Monday, January 15th 2001 at 6:30PM (ET). The series marked a continuation in what was considered the golden age of the block. The space-pirate adventures of Gene Starwind and his crew were well recieved - and to this day it is fondly remembered as one of the block's more well known shows.

  • During the opening of the series, if you go frame by frame right when Gene is firing his gun, you'll notice the word "Bang!" appears very briefly in the middle of the gunblast.


  • Hawkings
  • Outlaw Star is based on a 1997 manga series of the same name by Takehiko Ito. That series is, in turn, a spin-off of an earlier parody manga series, also by Ito, called Space Hero Tales ("Uchuu Eiyuu Monogatari," also known in English as "Future-Retro Hero Story").


  • The Outlaw Star anime series has its own spin-off TV series, Angel Links.


  • Joined Adult Swim in the latter part of its existance on Cartoon Network.
