IGPX: Immortal Grand Prix

In the late 2040's the world's most-popular motor sport is the Immortal Grand Prix. In the IGPX two teams each with three giant robots, driven by human pilots, race at speeds greater than 350 mph over a 60 mile track named 'The Big Eye'. Team Satomi, a crew of amateur pilots, has just won a minor-league championship and now finds themselves vaulted into the sport's highest level- the IG-1. Now, the untested rookies of Team Satomi must overcome impossible odds and beat the world's most skilled pilots (and ruthless opponents) and struggle to stay on top in one of the planet's biggest events.

IGPX premiered its first two episodes on Toonami on November 5th 2005 at 10pm and 10:30pm (EST) respectively. The series was a joint production of Cartoon Network and the world renowned Japanese production studio, Production I.G. Originally conceived as a 'microseries' (which aired in 2003 and consisted 5, 5 minute episodes) the 2005 IGPX series launches shed off most of the premise left by pilot predecessor and developed into a story about a racing competition. The show is a major milestone for the Toonami block, for which the show was created specifically for. With control over what was being developed for the block, the writers and creators were able to produce a series that fully took advantage of what could and couldn't fit into the block. Despite the excitement of a first Toonami Original Production, the series was eventually shipped off Toonami before the second season ended, due to low ratings. It finished its run in relative obscurity in the 'grave yard' slot, at Midnight on Fridays. The director of the series, NAME OF DIRECTOR, is known for another Toonami favorite, Outlaw Star; and the production company known for many infamous series such as Ghost in the Shell.

.:Misc.

  • The concept of IGPX was already floating around at Production I.G. When looking for something to develop, the Toonami team came across it and put it into production as a 5 part micro-series.

  • A GITS decal on some of the mechs in the show is a nod to Production IG's work on 'Ghost in the Shell'.

  • Hongro attempts to make the atmosphere real by adding 'every day' elements into the show. Because of this, characters play games, text message, and do little things that attempt to make the characters more believable and/or realistic.

  • The average CGI to 2D ratio in the series is the highest Production I.G. had ever done in the past; Meaning there was more intensive CGI work in the series then priorly attempted by the production studio.

  • The Master/Blaster title in the credits is an 'in' joke between Toonami producers Sean Akins and Jason DeMarco.

  • Dr. Blum in Episode 20 (Season 2) is likely a joke on the Voice actor Steven Blum, who voices the character along with numerous other Toonami characters including the block's host Tom.

  • The show started off with a lower TV rating; but writers took advantage of the block's ability to achieve a TV-PG rating and as such the language of the show continued to mature throughout the latter part of the first season and much of the second.
