Hotwheels Highway 35: World Race

Thousands of years ago, an advanced race of beings called Accelerons built an amazing network of speedways that wrapped around the world. When disaster struck, they hid these twisting, looping roads in another dimension, and left their powerful legacy at their furthest reaches. Now, eccentric scientist Peter Tezla has discovered the road, dubbing it Highway 35. Unable to navigate the road himself, Tezla has assembled thirty-five of the world's greatest drivers, granted them super-powered race cars and offered them millions to be the first to cross the finish line. Once there, the driver would retrieve the Wheel of Power, an energy source so potent, it could solve the international energy crisis. Winning will not only require Speed, Power, Performance and Attitude - these racers will also have to outmaneuver the mysterious, dark outlaw, Racer Zed-36, who is trying to sabotage the race!

Highway 35: World Race originally aired on Cartoon Network's short lived 'Saturday block' (SVES) starting July 12th, 2003. The show finally arrived at Toonami on Friday, October 3rd 2003. Many fans were skeptical of it's extremely toy genic premise prior to the series debut - a majority of which still held on to their distaste for its commercial tie-ins. Still, the series was liked by a some and gained enough momentum to justify the creation of a second miniseries - Acceleracers.

.:Misc.

  • As with most computer animated shows, the task of creating models for every visible object is a tedious and time consuming project for the company making the film. For 'World Race', Mainframe Entertainment created 35 different car models, but was unable to create just as many drivers. As such driver models are replicated with slight differences. At some points in throughout the film, it is noticable when more then one of these models is on the screen at any given time.

  • This production was created as a film, though Cartoon Network split it up into a five part (22-minutes each) miniseries.

  • The Intro song is performed by SmashMouth.

  • 35 is a reoccurring number throughout the series. The Highway is Highway 35; There are 35 cars and drivers, etc, etc. This is because the film was created to celebrate 35 years of Hotwheels Mania.
