In the last days of the One Year War, a Zeon special forces unit infiltrates a supposedly neutral colony to sabotage a secret Gundam development project. When the mission goes horribly wrong it falls to rookie Zeon pilot Bernie Wiseman, and a young boy he befriended, Alfred Izuruha, to destroy the Gundam prototype before a Zeon nuclear strike unit arrives to destroy the Gundam, and the whole colony with it.

On November 5, 2001 Gundam 0080 premiered as a special Toonami Midnight Run exclusive at 12:30 am. Just over a year later, on November 16, 2002, Gundam 0080 joined the Adult Swim Saturday night lineup, replacing Gundam 0083.

• Gundam 0080 was released in Japan in 1989 to celebrate Gundam’s tenth anniversary.



• Gundam 0080 marks the first time someone other than Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino served as director for the project.



• Gundam 0080 was part of Bandai’s "Gundam 8s" promotion of Gundam’s Universal Century’s "One Year War," and aired on Toonami along side the original Mobile Suit Gundam, and the 08th MS Team OVA.



• Though not seen through most of the story, Gundam 0080’s main Gundam, the RX-78NT-1 Gundam “Alex” was being developed for the Earth Federation’s New Type pilot. This is a reference to Mobile Suit Gundam’s main character, Amaru Ray.
