Dragonball Z
Dragonball Z, the sequel to the popular Dragonball series takes off as Goku, our hero from Dragon Ball, has grown up, married and fathered a child, Gohan. Unfortunately for him, he has more problems then he knows what to do with. Saiyans who try to destroy earth, powerful creatures who want to be immortal, evil androids, power-hungry Cell mutations and a big evil bubblegum-man named Buu all threaten the earth's existence.
Together Goku, Gohan, Piccolo, Vegeta, Yamcha, Krillian, Tien, and later Trunks and Goten fight against evils so powerful, universes hang in the balance. Seven magic balls remain, with the power to grant one wish...Which powers will be drawn to the earth because of them? Will the Earth Prevail?
Dragonball Z's long journey on Toonami began on August 31, 1998 at 5 PM EST/PST. With nearly 300 episodes, DBZ is the longest running series on Toonami. The first 53 syndicated episodes has less blood and were basically edited for syndication by Saban's standards, but fans loved the voices provided by the good people at Ocean Studio in Vancouver, British Colombia. The remaining episodes (of which a whopping 126 were released between September 1999 and December 2000) were a little more violent than its syndicated predecessor, edited to Cartoon Network's standards, and with voice work done in-house at FUNimation lead the way for drastic changes in the show.
On March 17, 2003, Toonami began broadcasting the final 15 episodes of Dragonball Z. The series came to a conclusion at the beginning of April, nearly five years after it began its run on the block. Its successor, Dragonball GT, premiered in November of the same year. The Dragonball franchise as a whole, is without a doubt Toonami's most popular and well known show, and will remain so long after it is gone from the block.
