G Gundam

The year is Future Century 60. The elite of humankind have immigrated to various colonies in space, leaving the poor behind on Earth. To eliminate the need for war, the nations develop the Gundam Fight, a tournament held every four years to determine the ruler of the Earth Sphere.

It is time for the thirteenth Gundam Fight to begin. However, more is at stake this time than a simple battle for power. Neo Japan’s Gundam Fighter, Domon Kasshu, is on a mission to find his brother who fled to Earth after stealing a prototype Gundam called the Dark Gundam. For this crime, Domon’s father has been sentenced to a state of suspended animation. Only by winning the tournament and tracking down the Dark Gundam can Domon clear his family name and save his father.

G Gundam made its Toonami debut on Monday, August 5, 2002 at 5:30 p.m. The series unconventional take on the now well known Gundam story helped it become a fan-favorite to Gundam and non-Gundam fans alike. The only Gundam series to enjoy ratings success similar to Gundam Wing on Toonami, G Gundam was given a second run on Toonami.

.:Misc.

  • G Gundam is also known as "Mobile Fighter G Gundam."

  • Although it was the third full length Gundam series to air on Toonami, G Gundam is the first of the "Alternate Universe" Gundam series. Broadcasting in Japan in 1994 after the end of the "Universal Century" Mobile Suit Victory Gundam.

  • Many of the various Gundam's names were modified for the English language version, primarily for religious and cultural reasons, and an alcoholic reference in one case.

  • Gundam Wing’s "Wing Gundam" makes a cameo appearance in the final battle as a teaser of sorts for Japanese fans, as Gundam Wing was currently in production at the time the final episodes of G Gundam were airing in Japan. Mobile Suits from previous Gundam series also made cameo appearances.
